Our Impact
Over $90,000 raised for childhood cancer research and care.
“The goal of brain tumor research at Dayton Children’s is to better understand how tumor cells evade the effects of various treatments, so we can devise more effective therapeutic strategies. Our researchers are characterizing the molecular features of cultured tumor cells exposed to different conditions, in order to improve the validity of preclinical studies that are critical for clinical trials to move forward. From experiments supported by a generous donation of $18,000 raised in the First Annual Ezra Hartke Race for Hope, we are learning how a commonly used steroid medication administered to brain tumor patients has the potential to alter the types of stem cells within a tumor, which could dramatically change the effectiveness of many types of treatments. These preliminary results have formed the foundation for a much larger project with the goal of targeting specific cell types within a brain tumor to increase the success of therapies." - Rob Lober, MD, PhD, Dayton Children's Hospital.
